Hosted by University City District, the grand opening of The Dirt Factory, a new composting facility in West Philadelphia, will be celebrated Wednesday, June 20.
The Dirt Factory, which occupies a long vacant lot at 4308 Market Street, will be home to impressively large “Earth Tub” composters. Each Earth Tub is capable of turning 3,200 pounds of waste into high quality organic compost. Filling the Earth Tub will be food waste from neighborhood businesses—collected by The Pedal Co-Op—that is combined with leaves from city streets to produce nutrient rich soil.
Smaller, more residentially sized composters will also be available at the site as will finished compost.
Dock Street Brewing Co., Little Baby’s Ice Cream, and Four Worlds Bakery will provide food and drink at the grand opening. Sour Mash will play live bluegrass music for your entertainment.
